This is a great metaphor. I think the main cognitive problem people have is that they seek some kind of almost spiritual or mystical justification of what money is b/c we submit to it, to earning it, to the power of those who have it. The practical answer of "scarcity that we all just sort of agree on" -- irrespective of any details of its implementation -- is very unsatisfying and disturbing in a way.
But great metaphors like this are helpful in that they reduce the size of the logical step needed and free up energy to allow work to be done on those more abstract, emotional, or philosophical aspects.
